What is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is an inflammation or infection of the lungs most commonly caused by a bacteria or virus. Pneumonia can also be caused by inhaling foreign substances. In all cases, the lungs' air sacs fill with pus, mucous, and other liquids and cannot function properly. This means oxygen cannot reach the blood and the cells of the body.
Extra: The most common infectious cause of pneumonia in the United States is the bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia.Pneumonia is commonly mistaken as the cold
Pneumonia is an infection of one or both lungs whichthat is usually caused by bacteria, viruses, bacteria or fungi. Prior to the discovery of antibiotics, one-third of all people who developed pneumonia subsequently died from the infection. Currently, over 3 million people develop pneumonia each year in the United States. Oversomtimes a half a million of these peoplevirus.
Some symptoms are admitted to a hospital for treatment. Although most of these people recover, approximately 5% will die from pneumonia. Pneumonia is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
Systoms:
sneezing
a fever
sore throat
the chills
chest pain
cough
headache
shortness of breath
muscle aches
Pneumonia treatments?
Pneumonia treatments depend on the type of pneumonia and the severity of symptoms. Bacterial pneumonias are usually treated with antibiotics, whereas viral pneumonias are treated with rest and plenty of fluids. Fungal pneumonias are usually treated with antifungal medications.
Over-the-counter medications are also commonly prescribed to better manage pneumonia symptoms. These include treatments for reducingcoughing, fever, reducing aches and pains, and suppressing coughs. In addition, it is important to get plenty of rest and sleep and drink lots of fluids.
Hospitalization for pneumonia may be required if symptoms are especially badfatigue, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing or a patient has a weakened immune system or other serious illness. At the hospital, patients generally are treated with intravenous antibiotics and possibly put on oxygen.
How can Pnumonia be prevented?
There are several ways to prevent pneumonia. But there are two vaccines that are available to prevent pnumococcal disease(the bacterial infection that is a common causeshortness of pneumonia): pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax). Prevnar is generally administered as part of the normal infant immunization procedure and is recommended for children less than 2 years of age or between two and four years with certain medical conditions. Pneumovax is provided for adults whobreath.
Some treatments are at increased risk of developing pneumococcal pneumonia, such as the elderly, diabetics, those with chronic heart, lung, or kidney disease, alcoholics, smokers, vacine, antibodies, and poeple withoutantiviral drugs.
DID YOU KNOW...every 15 sec, a spleen. The pneumonia vaccine may not completely prevent older adults from getting pneumonia, but it can reduce the levelchild dies of severity of a future pneumonia.
In addition to vaccinations, physicians recommend that people wash hands, refrain from smoking, eat healthfully, exercise, and stay away from sputum or cough particles from others with pneumonia.
